Tonle Sap and Preak Tol Bird Sanctuary:
Cambodia's premier nature experience An outstanding nature adventure on the majestic Tonle Sap, visiting floating villages and seeing spectacular endangered birds in the UNESCO bird sanctuary. Itinerary:
5.15 - 6.00am: An early start from your accommodation is rewarded by a spectacular sunrise on the Tonle Sap lake as you transfer onto your boat for the first stage of your journey. 6.00 - 8.00am: A glorious two hours crossing the Tonle Sap in your private, comfortable boat. Soon after leaving the shore you pass the fascinating Chong Khneas floating village which you will spend time visiting upon your return. This is the limit of most peoples experience but you will be rewarded for your extra endeavour as you continue to the quiet, delightful floating village of Preak Tol, a quarter of the way from Siem Reap to Battambang. As you approach the village the bird life begins to increase and you get an insight into the amazing sights to come. After a wonderful trip through Preak Tol you come to the conservation centre ( WC and drinks available). 8.00 - 11.00am: After a chance to look at information at the Conservation Centre and armed with a sporting charts for the bird species you are likely to see, you transfer onto your small boat for the trip around the bird sanctuary. The boat, which is powered by small motor or paddle, is piloted by one of the rangers from the conservation centre. The ranger knows the bird sanctuary intimately and will take you to the best places for viewing that day.You can expect to see many endangered birds including pelicans, storks and adjutants, and maybe even a fish eagle. You will also see many more common, but equally spectacular, birds including cormorants, kites, darters and herons. These birds are present in high number in the sanctuary and it is a humbling site to see them filling the trees around you or flocking on the water - one of the best nature experiences of Cambodia. Travelling back towards the village of Preak Tol through fascinating fishing areas, you meet your transfer for the journey back across the great Tonle Sap. 11.00 - 12.00pm: Enjoy a lazy transfer in a private boat back across the lake watching the many techniques of the local fishermen. 12.00 - 1.00pm: As a final highlight, you stop at the popular interesting tourist sight of the floating village of Chong Khneas and glide serenely around amongst the homes, schools, churches and petrol stations. You stop for a drink at a crocodile and fish farm where you can climb to an observation point and a fantastic view back across the lake.
1.00 - 2.00pm: After a final half hour boat journey back to your transport, you will arrive back in Siem Reap for a late lunch after a fantastic day. This is an outstanding day with wonderful nature and culture to experience and a great break from, and contrast to, temple viewing!
Bring with you; Sunscreen,Sun hat ,Binoculars ,Camera, Water" A fascinating day that we absolutely loved. To spend so long on the lake is a joy and the bird sanctuary is breathtaking. We saw hundreds of rare birds and the ranger was outstanding. The floating village of Preak Tol is very beautiful and unspoilt and is also highly recommended. Sambo organised this complicated day brilliantly and continually gave us interesting information and his usual humour.Make sure you do this day - you won't regret it!"
