With more than 10000 inhabitants, Kompong Kleang is the largest community on the lake. Most of the community, about 40 kilometers north of Siem Reap, is built on wooden poles anchored in the located. The people here are Khmer and live off fishing. So far, visitor numbers are far fewer than at Chong Khneas, but more and more tour operators are putting this unique community on their itineraries. Around the village, flooded forest provides important spawning community on their itineraries. Around the village, flooded forest provides important spawning grounds for the Tonle Sap’s fish population.
In the wet season, the houses are a couple of meters above the waterline,but once the waters have receded, the stilts can reach 10 meter the muddy soil-quite a sight.To get to Kompong Kleang, depending on the season and prevailing water levels, you might be able to head for Chong Khneas and catch a boat from there or head east on Route 6 to Domdek village, from where it’s a short boat ride (US$10) in the wet season, or a longer bike ride all the way to Kompong Kleang in the dry season.
