Several cheap Khmer restaurants can be found tucked to the northeastern side of the Old market. They all serve good-quality local dishes, most around US$2. Lots of Khmer eat here, which is as good a recommendation as any. All these eateries have English menus with photos. The best of the lot might be Socheata, which does an excellent fish amok for US$3.Don`t be intimidated by the no-thrills decor,since this might be your best chance to taste genuine Khmer cuisine if you are only visiting Siam Reap.Young Cambodians are trained towork in the restaurants business at the nonprofit “School of Rice’’ Sala Bai a small eatery onTaphul Road, which only opens during term time; form October to July. The restaurants is open on weekdays for lunch only between noon-2pm. The students serve quality Asian and western three-course set menus.Located on the first-floor terrace of a traditional wooden house on Oum Khun Street to the west of Taphul Road, the Tany Khmer Family kitchen (daily lunch and dinner) offers moderately priced (most courses around US$4) Cambodian dishes, as well a Khmer set menus (US$11).Great home cooking and informal atmosphere make this a very unpretentious, relaxing choice.The Khmer Family Restaurant (daily 11am-10pm) is part of a colonial block reaching all the way from The Passage, a narrow alley of galleries and restaurants, to the road west to the west of the Old Market. It serves cheap Khmer dishes in a relaxed atmosphere. Try fried morning glory with chicken, pork, beef, fish or tofu for US$2.50, or fried with a choice of the same add-ons for US$3. Also located in The passage, the tiny and comfortable Chamkar Vegetarian Restaurant (Mont to sat 11am to 10pm) offers a small but very attractive menu of vegetarian Khmer dishes, along with some great cakes. an altogether different dining experience in the old market siem reap area .
