SIGHTS The Old Market Area
Just 10 years ago the area around Old market(Phsar Chas), right in the heart of Siem Reap and close to the river, was a run down, dilapidated affair, a little unsavory at night. Since than, in vestment and restored have taken place and the colonial building around the covered market have recaptured their former grace. All this makes for a francophone ambience , a nostalgic vibe with more than a whiff of1’Indochine, and a very nice space to move around in. Several downtown areas of Cambodian cities retain substantial colonial architecture, but only here has it been completely rehabilitated. The market itself has largely been given over to things tourists might buy –from DVD documentaries on the Khmer Rouge to silk scarves, rice paper prints of Apsaras , opium pipes, and the ubiquitous krama,Cambodia‘s all-purpose scarf About half of market still sells products for the local community, including fruit, machine parts, and clothes. The streets around the market are lined with eateries (some budget , others upscale), shops, internet cafes, and bars-marking for a great stroll in the early evening. The stalls selling local produce open from the crack of dawn until early evening .while the shops selling curios open around 10am and close around 8pm. WAT BO
One of the oldest temple in Siem Reap, the 18th-century Wat Bo (entrance free), on the eastern side of the river, has some interesting frescoes on the walls of the prayer hall, including the depiction of an opium-smoking Chinese trader.WAT DAMNAK
Located on the eastern side of the river, this large temple compound (entrance free) was once a royal palace and has been beautifully restored. In The afternoons, locals come to sit by a large stone basin filled with lotus flowers and cat fish. The Center of Khmer Studies is located in a handsome building dating back to the early 20th-century, located within the temple compound.Wat Thmie Killing Field
Although the Khmer Rouge dared attack the temple ruins of Angkor, many people died in the area during and after the communist reign. Siem Reap Province contains numerous killing fields. Wat Thmei (entrance free) an active temple on a side road from Siem Reap to Angkor, has a glass-paneled Stupa in its courtyard, which is filled with the bones of victim of the Khmer Rouge.
